It may have been a very short cold snap, but it was also a very cold, cold snap that we just came through.  Keeping yourself warm could be an issue at times.  Keeping pipes from freezing proved a bit of a challenge for many.

I managed to avoid it.  My house, even though it is fairly old, managed to keep the pipes from freezing.  Looking at it, I believe the house was built before indoor plumbing was a thing.  The heating system at the time was a bunch of coal grates in the various rooms of the house and a wood cool stove in the kitchen.  None of these things exist today, but I can see how the outside edges of the house might have been a little more on the chilly side.  So when they installed that new fangled indoor plumbing, the pipes were kept away from the outside walls.  A bit of a pain in many ways, but something I was pretty happy about this weekend. I spoke with a few people dealing with frozen pipes over the past couple days.  Not only in homes but in offices and businesses around the area.  I’m thinking it might be hard to find a plumber over the next few days.  They are likely to be pretty busy.

Thankfully, it has warmed up enough to allow people a chance to deal with it, but there were a number of people I was talking to who were very thankful for our local volunteer firefighters who were helping people deal with the aftermath.  They are all very nice people, but I’m sure most of us don’t want to see them in their official capacity.  But it’s good to know they are there to help, sometimes in situations we don’t expect.  Like when your basement turns into a swimming pool.

It’s one of those things people might not have been considering over the weekend.  Keeping ourselves warm was tough enough.  Hopefully you made it through unscathed.
